RSPCA – Freedom Foods

December 2nd 2011

freedom food RSPCA logoOn December 2nd 2011, Highland Farms were successfully audited by the RSPCA and our premises and systems were granted Freedom Foods Certification. Below is information supplied by the RSPCA with regard to their Freedom Food Scheme.

Freedom Food is the RSPCA’s farm assurance and food labelling scheme. It is the only UK farm assurance scheme to focus solely on improving the welfare of farm animals reared for food.

Whether it is an egg-laying hen, a salmon, or a sheep (or for that matter, any other animal covered by the scheme), we believe that animals reared for food deserve a happy, healthy life. This means providing them with an environment that meets their needs – needs not confined to space, food and water but psychological needs too. So providing a stimulating environment that enables the animals to exhibit their natural behaviour is very important.

We also believe that any farm can rear animals to higher welfare standards as long as the will to do it is there.  Not just small, niche farms producing premium products but also larger farming businesses that supply a wider range of more affordable food.  As more of us look for food with higher welfare credentials, more farms are being encouraged to invest in farming this way. In fact you can already find Freedom Food labelled products in most of the major supermarkets, including  Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morison’s, Waitrose, Booths, The Co-Operative and Budgens.

The Freedom Food scheme covers every stage of a farm animal’s life, each stage governed by strict and compulsory RSPCA welfare standards. So not only do we inspect farms against the RSPCA welfare standards, but we also check the animals are handled, transported and slaughtered to the RSPCA’s standards too.

You can find out more about how Freedom Food works, the RSPCA welfare standards and where you can buy Freedom Food labelled food on this site. http://www.rspca.org.uk/freedomfood

FDA, Establishment Inspection

September 26th – 27th 2011

Highland Farms were selected by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to have a plant inspection and audit (Establishment Inspection Report EIR FEI: 3008581102) at our plant here in Maryport, Cumbria.

The inspector from the FDA, Mr Thomas E. Cote was scheduled to be with us for a full 2 day audit between September 26th and 27th.

We are pleased and very proud to announce that the inspection and audit went well with no violations what so ever reported. We feel that this process can only help and enhance the relationship between the FDA and Highland Farms as we fully support and cooperate with the US Government on all issues relating to Food Safety especially when Highland Farms are one of the major exporters of Frozen Salmon Fillets to the USA. Full details of the report are available directly from either the FDA www.fda.gov of from Highland Farms directly.
